Mammoth Mountain
Volcano
Mammoth mountain is a volcano at about 38°N, 119°W in California, USA. It is a lava dome and cinder cone volcano. It is 7,880 ft high. It erupted from 100,000 to 50,000 years ago.
Impact on Economy
Recent volcanic unrest, including seismic activity, gas emission, and tree kill, is related to a dike intrusion beneath Mammoth Mountain in 1989. Both Long Valley Caldera and Mammoth Mountain have experienced episodes of unrest over the last few decades (earthquakes, ground uplift, and/or volcanic gas emissions). The USGS manages an array of field sensors providing the real-time data needed to track unrest and assess hazards. Those hazards have an impact on the local tourism industry which can have an impact on employers and bring down salary earnings and can affect people who need that money to live.
Impact on Culture
Mammoth mountain massive size and chilling temperatures have made it a popular tourist attraction and a ski resort. This, making the resort impacts the culture of the area by giving an exciting place for skiers to race down in the winter and a nice area for people to work at and get some money, or for children and adults to have a fun time.
