In Siberian folklore, the world was carried on a dogsled, and when the dogs scratched at their fleas, there were earthquakes. Native American folklore had the world carried on a tortoise’s back. When the tortoise moved, there would be earthquakes. Many West Africans believed that the world was on top of a giant’s head, and earthquakes happened when he turned his head. In India, four elephants carried the earth. The elephants were on top of a turtle, which was on top of a cobra. There were earthquakes when any of the animals moved. In Norse mythology, the trickster god, Loki, tricked Balder's blind brother, Hoder, into accidentally killing Balder. The other gods punished Loki by tying him to a rock under a venomous serpent. His wife, Sigyn, would hold a bowl above him to collect the venom, but when she had to empty it out, the venom would fall onto Loki’s face. Loki writhed from the pain so much that he shook the earth.
Impact on Architecture
Many buildings are usually destroyed. Monuments and landmarks can be demolished. Fallen buildings can also crash into secure buildings which would not have fallen otherwise.
